How the Father Timothy Gahan Division puts the Order's motto to work in the Upstate — honoring the Great Hunger by feeding our neighbors.

Hibernian Hunger Project

In remembrance of Ireland's Great Hunger, the national AOH established the Hibernian Hunger Project in two thousand three. Divisions across the country run food drives, stock local pantries, and serve soup kitchens — then apply for national grants that reward the work. Over the past four years the project has distributed nearly fifty thousand dollars in grants and helped feed well over two and a half million people.

An Gorta Mór

Why hunger, why now

The Great Hunger of eighteen forty-five to eighteen forty-nine changed Ireland forever and sent a generation across the Atlantic. The Hibernian Hunger Project turns that memory into action: every March, divisions stock food banks and soup kitchens that run low after winter, then report the work for national recognition. It is Christian Charity with a long memory.

Here in Spartanburg we do the same — partnering with local pantries and parish outreach so our neighbors have a table, and so the story of the Famine is told as service, not just history.
